Following last night’s tweets by the ruling party President and speaker of the Parliament former President Mohamed Nasheed, current opposition Progressive Congress Coalition has called for the immediate release of the former President Abdulla Yameen. In a statement released earlier today, the opposition coalition stated that the sentence on the former President was the baseless result of political persecution and the product of an unjust trial.

The press by the opposition coalition referred to a series of tweets by the ruling party President and speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed where he alleged that the sentence on the former President Abdulla Yameen is unjust and that the former President is being subjected to political persecution and that a fair and independent trial should be given to the opposition leader. The opposition coalition went on to state that admittance of political prosecution and arbitrary detention of former President Abdulla Yameen by the ruling party President and Speaker of the Parliament is vindication of the accusations against the opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen.

Tension within the small nation has been rising following the highly controversial court case against the former President following what was deemed by many legal experts as “unconstitutional” and “against the spirit of the constitution”. A major source of criticism and controversy  to the case was the suspension of the trial judge who presided over the case, the Chief Justice of the Criminal Court of the Maldives just 4 hours prior to the sentencing.

Then Chief Justice of the Criminal Court of Maldives went on to publicly release a statement alleging top executives of the state of inteffering with the judiciary to ensure a conviction on the former President Abdulla Yameen. The former President’s legal team has also accused the state of inteffering with the judiciary with the President Abdulla Yameen’s appeal case lingering in legal limbo for months.
