Transparency Maldives has raised its concern following allegations of government influence and control over independent institutions. Transparency Maldives raised its concern after executives from the Ministry of Environment and Energy warned the Director General of Environmental Protection Agency after he refused to release a statement in accordance with the government’s narrative, to defend the reclamation project of K. Gulhifalhu.

Transparency Maldives tweeted saying that they condemn the intimidation and hindering of the independent institutions such and that doing so negatively impacts EPA’s ability to carry out its mandate. They also called out on the current administration that the empowerment and strengthening of EPA was amongst the pledges made by the current government which were to be enacted within the first 100 days.
