Ruling Party MDP has amended the constitution of Maldives after removing opposition parliamentarians form the parliament Chamber. Tonight’s unconventional parliament session was announced to amend key articles of the constitution to bring forward a legal remedy to the postponed Local Council Elections.
The removal of opposition MPs to amend the constitution has been met with much criticism by the public with many noting the ruling party’s failure to receive constructive criticism of critical issues by opposition members who pointed out that the amendment was in violation of rulings by the Supreme Court of Maldives.
During tonight’s session, opposition VP Ahmed Shiyam was forcibly removed from the parliament Chambers and attacked by ruling party MPs. Opposition Coalition has also criticized the attack on their VP and called for an investigation while government MPs have stood their ground. MP Hussein Shaheem stated that “We will amend the constitution even if we have to do it at gun point”.
