Protestors have gathered near the Maldives parliament voicing out their concerns following the parliaments “Police Reform Bill” which would allow the parliament to gain unprecedented control over the police and its operations and investigations.

The spontaneous gathering was fueled by the ruling party’s 65 member led supermajority in the parliament’s ridicule of the Police service during a parliament session. Ruling party MPs ridiculed the Maldives Police Service and with some notable MPs calling to harass the police.

Public sentiment has been overwhelmingly in support of the police, with some describing the  ruling party’s attempts to usurp control of the police Service was due to past violent confrontations with the police following Speaker Nasheeds’s resignation from Presidency in 2012.
