Defence Minister Mariya Didi has thanked the High Commission of India in Maldives for the Dornier Do 288 aircraft directed to the Maldives National Defence Force by the government of India. In a tweet made today, Minister Mariya Didi highlighted on how the aircraft would aid the national defence force in protecting the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). She also stressed on how the aircraft would enhance the defence force’s rescue efforts.
The Dornier Do 288 is a German designed light utility craft produced from 1981 to 1998 by Dornier GmbH, later merged into Fairchild-Dornier. However the aircrafts sent by the Indian government is a licensed copy made in Kanpur, India in 1983.
Amidst public outrage on the growing Indian military presence in the Maldives, the Maldives National Defence Force has insisted that this aircraft will continue to be under the control of the government of Maldives. However, as of now the aircraft will be operated by Indian military personnel.
