Tension between ruling party MDP factions rise as separatist faction protest in front of the Parliament calling to address the housing crisis faced by the residents of Male’ city. The separatist movement which has cause factions within the ruling party MDP led by former vice-chair of the integrity committee of MDP Mr. Shuaib Ali has been ardent on forcing the government to keep its pledges of awarding land plots from Hulhumale’ phase 2 and Gulhifalhu to Male’ city residents.
The protestors on the gathered in front of the parliament with placards stating “No votes till we get homes” during the first session of the last quarter of the parliament session scheduled this year. However, it is to be noted that Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed along with three other ruling party MP’s are in isolation due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Tension between factions within the ruling party MDP has been boiling after Shuaib Ali accused the former President of conspiring against incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih while the party Chairperson MP Hassan Latheef opted to disregard the claim and defended former President Mohamed Nasheed. However, Shuaib and his faction continues to raise their voice calling out on the government to provide unconditional housing for residents of Male’ city in Hulhumale phase -2 and Gulhifalhu.
