US Congress House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Representative Jamie Raskin is to introduce a bill to establish a 25th Amendment Commission to assess the President’s mental and physical health and to weigh in on whether the sitting US President is fit for office.
This bill predicted to be a mostly symbolic, is meant to show that the Congress can oust the President of the United States from his office if the President is mentally unfit for office.
Though the Republican majority led senate would promptly kick out the bill, this would still set up a precedent as US President trump continues his treatment for COVID-19. The 25th Amendment states that amendment would help the congress to “ensure effective and uninterrupted leadership in the highest office in the Executive Branch of the government.”.
A similar bill was introduced in 2017 titled “Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity Act” by Rep Jamie Raskin following a massive petition by the US Psychologists Association which alleged that President Donald trump exhibited serious mental health problems and that he is unfit for office.
