World Health Organization has advised world leaders to cease the usage of lockdowns as a primary form of controlling COVID-19. WHO’s special envoy on COVID-19, Dr. David Nabarro urged world leaders not to use lockdowns citing the damage it’s causing on mental health and physical health along with the devastating effects on the economies.
“The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.” said Dr. David Nabarro emphasizing on just how much they would avoid implementing lockdowns. He continued on to point out the negative consequences of a lockdown, pointing to the devastating effects it has had on world tourism while exponentially increasing world hunger and poverty issues.
Dr. David Nabarro also highlighted on the petition submitted by thousands of medical professionals last week calling to end the COVID-19 lockdowns worldwide, citing the “irreparable damage we have caused.”. “We have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and we recommend an approach we call “Focused Protection.” said Dr. David Nabarro.
According to world bank, the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown will force 150 million people into extreme poverty. The current lockdown method is causing devastating effects on public health and the world economy. According to the World Labor Organization, over half a billion people lost their jobs within the first 9 months of 2020, equivalent to a loss of $3.5 trillion. A drastic increase in domestic abuse, suicide, drug overdoses and child abuse was recorded within the same period, attributed to the stress form COVID-19 lockdown.
