Former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed’s sexual harassment case has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office by Maldives Police Service for prosecution. The former Minister was removed from the cabinet following the allegations of sexual harassment brought up by the tourism ministry staff.
According to the Police, the documents relevant to the case has been sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office. sources also indicate that 17 witness statements were taken by the police of which 10 were from females. The allegations are not the first against Ali Waheed as even his fellow cabinet Minister Aishath Nahula had allegedly had to face sexual harassment from Ali Waheed.
In a leaked audio, the former minister was heard verbally harassing Minister Aishath Nahula, making sexual remarks. The case was allegedly brought to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s attention but no action was taken against the former Tourism Minister back then. Ali Waheed has maintained that the charges against him are a conspiracy by the ruling party and that he is innocent.
