President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration has come under fire after it was revealed that the President’s Office spends MVR1.69 million every month as salary for political appointees at the top executive office. This information was revealed via an RTI exercised by Mr Aiman Latheef who revealed that over MVR20.24 million is spent each year as salary for the political appointees at the President’s Office.
According to the document, the president himself was revealed to have been taking home a hefty paycheck of MVR100,000.00 while the Vice-President Faisal Naseem takes home MVR 75,000.00 every month. The documents revealed by Mr Aiman Latheef also stated that the President’s Office currently houses 7 political appointees with a salary of MVR 66,000.00.
In addition to them, the President’s office also has 10 state ministers appointed with a monthly salary of 48,500.00 Maldivian Rufiyaa. Apart from this president’s office also has 13 Deputy Ministers who receive 43,000.00 Maldivian Rufiyaa per month. Often criticized for the redundant number of political appointees, president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government continues to appoint more political appointees even amidst the COVID19 pandemic.
