The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa has sent welcomed the climate change action plan (NDC) created and adopted by the Maldives. In a letter sent by Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, she remarked on the the adoption and updating of the Nationally Determined Contribution also known as the NDC amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
She further went on to state that with the current NDC and the determination of the Maldives to further reduce the emission of harmful gases to the atmosphere, the Maldives could essentially achieve “Net Zero” by 2030.
Furthermore, she also remarked on the importance of the crisis mitigation plans proposed by the Maldives, as one of the most climate vulnerable nations in the world.
With and average ground level of 1.2m above sea level, Maldives is one of the most climate vulnerable states in the world and since the 1990’s has taken a proactive stance in fighting against climate change. And even though the island nation has one of the smallest emission rates worldwide, it has dedicated itself to reducing its impact on the nature and world.
