Malé city Mayor-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has tweeted expressing concern at the use of excessive force by the police in disrupting the peaceful rally held last night by youths to voice against sexual harassment in the Maldivian work culture and society.
In his tweet, Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that he was appalled by the use of excessive against civilians who were expressing their concerns. He further called on to the authorities to investigate such misconduct and that action should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.

The police brutality towards the youths and media personnel has been met with overwhelmingly negative reception by the public with many prominent politicians on both end of the spectrum condemning the use of force against youths to disrupt a peaceful rally. According to Maldives Police Service, the front liners involved in last night’s incident are now on paid suspension pending investigation.
