Save Addu campaign has announced a panel discussion with high profile individuals to discuss the Indian Military presence in Maldives and the establishment of a Indian Consulate in in the southernmost Addu City.
The panelists include Professor Hassan Ugail, the director of the Center for Visual Computing at University of Bradford, UK, the first university professor from Maldives. Professor Ugail is also the President of Ugail Foundation.
Former Captain of MNDF Dr. Ali Ihusaan, the CEO of Happymarket Trading Company (Bsc in Defence and Strategic Studies, Wes Point, NY), Former Deputy Mayor of Addu City Council, Hassan Shahid, and Social Sector Advocate, Mohamed Shihab will be joining as panelists.
Mr. Mohamed Nashid, a veteran diplomat with 18 years in Maldives foreign services and a Master’s Degree in International Politics (Hull, UK) will also be part of the panel.
The panel discussion will be live streamed via Facebook and Twitter at 9PM local time this Friday 4th June 2021, according to the posts shared on the SaveAddu official social media accounts. A number of local online news outlets will also live stream the feed.
SaveAddu campaign commenced on social media in response to India’s seemingly unilateral decision to establish an Indian consulate in Addu city, Maldives. A great number of people expressed their concerns regarding the irregularities in establishing the consulate, on different social media outlets. Attempts from the ruling party MPs to mitigate the issue only led to further public outcry.
A petition opposing the presence of Indian military personnel and the establishment of the Indian consulate is also being circulated in social media platforms.
