Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology is set to celebrate World Environment Day with the slogan “Ecosystem Restoration”, this Saturday.
According to the Press release by the Ministry, the slogan signifies the preservation, restoration and protection of natural habitats, resources and ecosystems in the Maldives.
The press release further emphasized on the importance of the cause, noting down important steps that can be taken individually to support it. Planting trees, cleaning trash from the sea and guiding others to keep the environment clean were some of the actions highlighted by the Ministry.
Reserving the natural beauty of Maldives and its link to the mental and physical well being of the Maldivian people was also noted by the Ministry.
The Ministry stated that the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness of the beautiful beaches of Maldives, the rich coral reefs and the unique underwater beauty falls on of every single individual in the country and further warned that failing to do so would lead to irrevocable damage.
Some of the work done by the Ministry, in relation to the campaign was also highlighted in the press release such as; conservation of ecosystems, protection of endangered species and mitigating the damage caused by climate change.
Mohamed Zahir from the Ministry stated on the importance of carrying out such campaigns in the future citing the protection of turtles, through laws and regulations, as a successful campaign. He further noted that a previous campaign to protect endangered flora in the Maldives named “return of the Flowers” resulted in the successful preservation of many plant species.
The Ministry informed that an online ceremony will be held this Saturday, with the presence of Minister of Environment, Technology and Climate Change, Aminath Shauna to commence the activities planned for the day. The ceremony is to be live streamed via social media and local news channels at 14:30 local time.
