An online protest has been launched, calling for lower rents on the social housing flats in Hulhumalé phase 2. The social housing flats were constructed during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, with the current administration facing massive criticism for refusing to handover the units over the past three years.

The online protest was organized by the “Hiyaa Flat Union”. The protest will be held for 32 hours as members share different photos calling for the authorities to lower the rents for the units.

According to the members, when they initially received the housing units during President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, the rent for the units was fixed at MVR 5,000.00. However, this was increased to MVR 7,500.00 under the current administration.

They also complained that state authorities are refusing to meet them with the exception of the newly elected opposition majority Malé City Council and the Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC).

The 7,000 social housing units were constructed under former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration as means to control the rent hike issue facing the nation’s capital.
