Former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has declared his intentions to appeal to opposition leader former President Abdulla Yameen for political support and aid over his ideological differences with incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In a series of messages sent to the ruling MDP’s National Congress WhatsApp group, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed poured out his sentiments as he seeks treatment in England for the injuries he sustained in the 06th May 2021 terror attack.
In his messages, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed stated that his ideologies differ from that of President Solih’s.
He continued on to state that though their ideologies differ, personally, they remain close friends. He noted that President Solih is “Ibu Dhonbe” to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed’s children.
However, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed also noted that he can no longer politically remain with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Speaker Mohamed Nasheed also stated in his messages that he acknowledges that some people would be unhappy with his comments but that there is nothing he could do about it.
Speaker Mohamed Nasheed continued on to state that if former President Abdulla Yameen supports a moderate approach to Islam, he would appeal to President Yameen for political support and aid.
President Abdulla Yameen is yet to make any statements as he is current serving a jail term following a controversial court case. Late Ramadan he was temporarily transferred to home arrest after a massive cluster of COVID-19 was detected in the jail due to poor housing conditions. However, though he remains in home arrest, a reactionary political shift in power is taking place in the Maldives.
While the opposition continues to gain support, the ruling party and its coalition partners struggles to maintain control over the government as its internal conflicts continue to impair the fragile alliance between the parties with many prominent members leaning towards creating new political parties in time for the 2023 Presidential Election.
It has been speculated that Speaker Mohamed Nasheed blames President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his Defence Minister Mariya Didi for neglecting to thwart the 06th may terror attack even with prior knowledge of the attack. President Mohamed Nasheed who has been a strong advocate of anti-extremism has in the past voiced his concerns over President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s lackluster approach to religious extremism and terrorism.
Meanwhile Acting Opposition Leader Abduraheem Abdulla stated that the opposition would not go to a deal with Speaker Mohamed Nasheed. He stated that the opposition would not cut a deal with Speaker Mohamed Nasheed nor have they received any such offers from Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
