Unlikely hero: Sensational Yan Wengang blazes a trail for Chinese sliders at Beijing 2022

Nothing about what Yan Wengang has achieved over the past few days on the 1,615-meter track of the National Sliding Center in Yanqing is normal. Long jumpers do not sparkle at the skeleton events; callow youngsters do not upstage their better-known, seasoned rivals at high-level competitive tournaments; Chinese sliders do not storm into the final and wrap up the day by reaching the Olympic podium on their debut.

However, as Yan vividly demonstrated in his four breathtaking runs in the men’s skeleton event at the Beijing Winter Games, the 24-year-old is not an ordinary athlete. In just seven years, he has gone from being a track and field athlete concentrating on refining the technical skills of the long jump to stunning the world by winning China’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sliding sports.

With maturity and poise that belied his relative inexperience, Yan beat off fierce competitions from some of the world’s finest sliders and clinched a bronze medal with a sensational total time of 4:01.77 on Friday night, trailing only two German titans Christopher Grotheer (4:01.01) and Axel Jungk (4:01.67). Yan’s teammate Yin Zheng also delivered an incredible performance to finish fifth, just behind Sochi 2014 skeleton champion Aleksandr Tretiakov.

“I didn’t even think I was able to win a bronze medal. I didn’t think I was this strong,” beamed an emotional Yan after the race. “Normally, in training I don’t make too many mistakes, I think I do quite well.”

Yan admitted that he enjoyed a competitive advantage of being more familiar with the track and seized the opportunity to steal a march on his rivals.

“Before the competition today, I told myself not to worry about it, the athletes from other countries have never raced on the track at night before, so heat 3 is when the competition really begins. When heat 4 came around, I told myself to just go for it, and just show what I’ve been able to do in training,” he observed.

Born in north China’s Tianjin, a municipality that neighbors Beijing, Yan has had explosive strength and raw power since he was a child. The first sport he picked up was the long jump, which has enabled him to develop exceptional body control and coordination.

“In 2015, China formed a national skeleton team, and I was recommended to join the team, thus changing my main discipline from long jump to skeleton,” Yan explained. “When I first started training, I knew absolutely nothing about skeleton. I was even scared to play the sport because I’ve never been on a roller coaster, let alone skeleton.”

“I was so scared the first time I raced that I ended up being pushed down the track by my coach,” said Yan, smiling. “But as I learned more about skeleton, I gradually became less scared. And after hundreds of training sessions, I now enjoy the feeling of sliding at top speed.”

Yan remembers every injury he has sustained on the ice track’s most treacherous spots. “I had bruises all over my body because I was not skilled enough. But the next day, I had to continue training, and the swelling and bruises wouldn’t go away all winter,” said Yan.

Hours of training on track are clearly paying off. Despite only making his international debut in 2018, Yan continues his steady rise.

In 2018 and 2019, he had two top-10 finishes at successive Junior World Championships. In 2019, he also became the first Chinese athlete to win a race at the Europa Cup in Koenigssee, Germany. In 2020, he managed an impressive sixth place in the mixed team event at the World Championships in Altenberg, Germany.

However, no one could have predicted that within two years, he’d become an Olympic hero in his home country and steal the limelight in a sport largely dominated by European giants.

While Yan has defied his underdog status in completing the impossible, he believed that his breakthrough at the Winter Games could mark the beginning of a new era.

“This medal should make China confident about our future in skeleton,” he mused. “We do have the ability to be competitive. I will continue to work hard and try to achieve more.”

LONDON, April 26 (Xinhua) — Leicester City were promoted back to the Premier League from the Championship (second division) at the first attempt on Friday, without needing to kick a ball on Friday night, after Queens Park Rangers beat Leeds United 4-0.

The result means that Leicester with 74 points are four points ahead of Leeds, who are currently second in the classification with just a game to play, with Ipswich Town on 69 points and fourth place Southampton on 64 points, with two games left this season.

Leicester City were relegated from the end of last season from the Premier League, before appointing Enzo Maresca as first team coach.

Maresca has led them to a successful campaign, with 30 wins from 44 matches and with 86 goals in their favor.

The 2016 Premier League winners will be accompanied into the top flight by either Leeds or Ipswich Town, who have the chance to move above Leeds on Saturday if they win away to seventh place, Hull City, who also need a win to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top-six and getting into the end of season play-offs.

ROME, April 22 (Xinhua) — Inter Milan won their 20th Serie A title on Monday, beating AC Milan 2-1 in a derby that witnessed three players sent off in the dying minutes.

With a comfortable 14-point lead over second-placed AC Milan and only six rounds remaining, Inter Milan was poised to secure the Scudetto even before the derby, aiming to repeat their 2021 championship success. Entering the match at San Siro, Inter fielded a strong lineup with Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram leading the attack, while AC Milan opted to bench Olivier Giroud, positioning Rafael Leao as the lone striker.

The Nerazzurri, who had previously overwhelmed their city rivals 5-1 earlier in the season, opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Federico Dimarco’s corner was deftly flicked on by Benjamin Pavard to Francesco Acerbi, who headed it in. Lautaro missed an opportunity to extend the lead shortly afterward, sending the ball over the bar from an unmarked position.

AC Milan had the chance to equalize but Yann Sommer got down well to deny Leao’s strike, while at the other end Thuram’s attempt was inches wide.

Inter Milan doubled the lead straight after the break in a spectacular fashion when a long ball over the top found Thuram, who cut inside and feinted a curler to the far top corner, but instead the Frenchman smashed it with ferocity into the near corner, surprising goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

AC Milan then threw on Giroud and Noah Okafor to strengthen the attack, and their efforts paid off in the 80th minute when Matteo Gabbia’s header was parried onto the post, before Fikayo Tomori headed it into the net.

The match escalated in stoppage time with the dismissals of Denzel Dumfries and Theo Hernandez from Inter and AC Milan, respectively, and soon after, Davide Calabria was also sent off for elbowing Inter’s Davide Frattesi.

In the final moments, even Milan’s goalkeeper Maignan joined the attack, but AC Milan could not prevent Inter from celebrating their victory.

In another key Serie A battle for fourth place, Bologna secured a 3-1 victory over Roma away from home. Oussama El Azzouzi put Bologna ahead with a spectacular bicycle kick, Joshua Zirkzee added to the lead before halftime, and despite Sardar Azmoun’s effort to narrow the deficit, Alexis Saelemaekers’ lob ensured Bologna solidified their hold on fourth place, now seven points clear of Roma, who have a game in hand.

Dortmund stuns Atletico in dramatic Champions League quarters

BERLIN, April 16 (Xinhua) — Borussia Dortmund turned around a 2-1 first-leg defeat by clinching a hard-earned 4-2 victory over resilient Atletico Madrid in the second leg on home soil on Tuesday.

Dortmund advanced 5-4 on aggregate into the Champions League semifinals.

The BVB immediately went in search of the goal and came close with just three minutes gone when Marcel Sabitzer’s shot from inside the box was blocked by defender Cesar Azpilicueta in the last nick of time.

Two minutes later, Atletico had the golden chance to extend the aggregate lead, but Alvaro Morata pulled wide with only Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to beat.

Dortmund controlled possession though and got rewarded for their efforts at the half-hour mark when Mats Hummel’s defence-splitting through the ball allowed Julian Brandt to fire past Madrid custodian Jan Oblak from a tight angle.

The hosts gained momentum and doubled the lead in the 39th minute as Sabizter teed up for Ian Maatsen, who slotted home from a sharp angle into the far post bottom corner.

After the restart, Los Colchoneros came out with their guns blazing and restored parity on aggregate with the great assistance of Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels, who accidentally cleared Mario Hermoso’s dangerous header into the wrong goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Dortmund as Atletico increased the pressure before retaking the aggregate lead with 69 minutes gone as Dortmund’s defense couldn’t clear the ball from the area, allowing Angel Correa to hammer the ball into the roof of the net, making it 2-2 on the scoreboards.

Dortmund was flabbergasted but bounced back with two goals in quick succession. First, Niclas Fullkrug made it 3-2 on the scoreboards in the 71st minute after heading home Sabitzer’s pinpoint cross before the Austrian international got his name on the scoreboards as well after unleashing a hammer past Oblak two minutes later.

Atletico opened up and pressed frenetically for a goal, but Dortmund’s defense stood firm to claim the team’s first semi-final since 2013. The BVB will encounter Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.

“I am really happy and proud of the boys. We were the better and more active team today. That is why we deserved to advance into the next round,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

“We had the chance to draw the game and go ahead in the tie but, when you don’t take advantage of your chances, this happens, even more so in the Champions League,” commented Atletico captain Koke.
