World Cup Group A preview: Netherlands set for big-stage return

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) — What is a seemingly innocuous World Cup opening phase for the Netherlands promises to be one of trials and tribulations for Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar.

While the Oranje are tipped by many to breeze through their first three fixtures, much less is expected of their Group A rivals.

Senegal have not progressed to the knockout rounds since 2002. Ecuador last did it in 2006. Qatar have never done so as they make their first World Cup appearance.

The Netherlands will be determined to reassert themselves on football’s biggest stage after their absence from the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Here is a breakdown of the four teams in Group A, which kicks off on November 20 when Qatar and Ecuador meet in Al Khor.

THE NETHERLANDS

Having failed to qualify for the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands are back among Europe’s elite.

The three-time World Cup runners-up secured a berth in Qatar by finishing top of their qualifying group with seven wins, two draws and one defeat, two points ahead of second-placed Turkey.

The Oranje’s improved fortunes coincided with the return of manager Louis van Gaal, who took charge of the national team for a third time following the sacking of Frank de Boer in July last year.

Star player: Virgil van Dijk

The Liverpool No. 4 remains one of the world’s top defenders, combining strength and aerial prowess with composure on the ball and a superb passing range.

At 31, this will be the last time he competes in football’s showpiece tournament while in his prime. He will not be lacking in motivation, having missed Euro 2020 with a knee injury.

One to watch: Matthijs de Ligt

Van Dijk’s central defensive partner will likely be Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt. The 23-year-old has been an increasingly important part of the national team since 2017 and has raised his game to another level since joining Bayern Munich in July.

After an inauspicious start to his time in the Bundesliga, the former Ajax and Juventus player is now an undisputed starter under manager Julian Nagelsmann.

ECUADOR

The Tricolor will be making their first World Cup appearance since 2014, when they were knocked out in the group stage in Brazil.

Gutavo Alfaro’s men secured a direct ticket to Qatar by finishing fourth in the South American qualifying group, ahead of teams of the caliber of Peru, Colombia, Chile and Paraguay.

They seem to be peaking at the right time, having lost just one of their last 12 matches and going undefeated in their past six.

Star player: Moises Caicedo

Despite his tender years, Moises Caicedo is already Ecuador’s midfield fulcrum.

The 20-year-old’s poise and geometric passing have also made him a constant presence in the midfield of Premier League outfit Brighton.

His performances this season have reportedly attracted the interest of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool

One to watch: Piero Hincapie

Another young player to shine on the European stage this season is Bayer Leverkusen central defender Piero Hincapie.

Like Caiecedo, Hincapie is also the subject of transfer speculation, with media reports linking him with Arsenal, Napoli, AC Milan and Roma.

The 20-year-old has already been capped 21 times for his country and was a vital part of a defense that conceded just 19 goals in Ecuador’s 18-game World Cup qualifying campaign.

QATAR

Qatar has a population of just three million people and is not renowned for its football pedigree. But only a fool would take the tournament hosts lightly.

Felix Sanchez’s men won the 2019 Asian Cup on home soil, beating the likes of South Korea and Japan in the process. They also performed above expectations as guests at last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, losing to eventual champions United States in the semifinals.

An impressive mix of experience and youth, combined with Sanchez’s tactical expertise and the support of home fans, could see Qatar again punch above their weight here.

Star player: Almoez Ali

Sudan-born striker Almoez Ali was the top scorer at last year’s Gold Cup with four goals in five games. He also won the golden boot at the 2019 Asian Cup, netting nine times in seven matches.

He is the only player to lead the scoring at international championships in two different continents.

Rising star: Akram Afif

Qatar also boast an attacking weapon in 26-year-old winger Akram Afif. The Al Sadd player has scored 76 goals and provided 63 assists in 124 appearances for the Qatari club, whom he joined from Villarreal in 2018.

A strong World Cup showing could earn him a move back to Europe, where he also had spells with Spain’s Sporting Gijon and Belgium’s Eupen.

SENEGAL

Senegal are Africa’s highest ranked team (18th) and have lost just one of their past eight matches.

The Lions of Teranga will be aiming to become the first African team to progress beyond the quarterfinal stage at a World Cup. The feat was achieved by Cameroon in 1990, Ghana in 2010 and Senegal themselves in 2002.

Manager Aliou Cisse can take much of the credit for turning a talented but erratic outfit into one that has developed a potent mix of defensive solidity with attacking flair.

Having taken charge of the Lions after their group stage elimination at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Cisse led the team to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final in 2019 before going one better by lifting the continental trophy for the first time in February.

Star player: Sadio Mane

After struggling early in his international career, Sadio Mane has become a prolific performer for Senegal and is the national team’s all-time highest scorer, netting 34 times in 93 matches.

The striker’s appetite for goals has not diminished since his July move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich. The 30-year-old has averaged a goal every two games across all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit.

One to watch: Pape Matar Sarr

A strong and composed defensive midfielder, Pape Matar Sarr caught the attention of major European clubs with his performances for Metz as an 18-year-old in the 2020-2021 Ligue 1 season.

Tottenham won the race for his signature, loaning him back out to Metz last season to allow him to continue his development in France.

Having returned to Spurs in the summer, Sarr has struggled for first-team opportunities under Antonio Conte this season, but he is expected to be a key presence at the heart of Senegal’s midfield in Qatar.

LONDON, May 20 (Xinhua) — Liverpool have confirmed Feyenoord coach Arne Slot as their new head coach with an announcement on their official website.

“Liverpool Football Club can announce Arne Slot has agreed a deal to become the club’s new head coach, formally taking up the position on June 1, 2024, subject to a work permit.”

“The 45-year-old will join the Reds from Feyenoord ahead of the 2024-25 season after a deal was reached with the Eredivisie club for his services,” explained Liverpool.

Slot’s arrival to replace Klopp has been an open secret in recent days and Jurgen Klopp even lead the supporters at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium in chanting his name as he said ‘goodbye’ after a Sunday’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, which ended the season.

Slot joins Liverpool after three years at Feyenoord in which he led them to the 2023 Eredivisie title which was their first title in six years, and this year he followed that success by leading them to the Dutch Cup in April.

Review: Foden at the double as Manchester City assure fourth consecutive Premier League title

LONDON, May 19 (Xinhua) — Manchester City claimed the Premier League title on Sunday as Phil Foden scored two early goals that helped them to a 3-1 win at home to West Ham.

The doubts over who would win this season’s Premier League only lasted the two minutes that Phil Foden needed to open the scoring for City in their home game against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

The destiny of the title always rested in Manchester City’s hands as they looked to defend a 2-point lead against Arsenal, knowing a win would give them a fourth consecutive title.

Arsenal needed City to draw or lose while winning their game at home against Everton, but Foden’s opening goal must have felt like a bucket of ice water for the Arsenal fans in the Emirates Stadium hoping for a miracle.

Foden rifled the ball into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area and then made it 2-0 in the 18th minute to finish off a typical City attacking move.

When Idrissa Gueye gave Everton a 40th-minute lead away to Arsenal, it looked as if everything was going to be over before halftime, but Mohammed Kudus pulled a goal back for West Ham with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 42nd minute and when Takehiro Tomiyasu quickly drew Arsenal level, the title race still had life in it.

It was all over in the 59th minute when Rodri re-established City’s two-goal lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the West Ham area that Alphonse Areola got his fingertips to, but was unable to keep out.

Arsenal also fulfilled their obligations in the 89th minute of their game as Kai Havertz scored a goal that was given after a long VAR check.

The results mean that both Man City and Arsenal have both won their last nine games and the last time either of them failed to win in the Premier League was a 0-0 draw between the two sides in the Etihad Stadium two months ago.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp said an emotional goodbye to Anfield with a 2-0 win as Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers with first half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah, with his side’s task made much easier by Nelson Semedo’s 28th-minute red card for the visitors.

Chelsea’s 2-1 win at home to Bournemouth with goals from Moises Caicedo and Raheem Sterling means they finish sixth and will play next season’s Europa League unless Manchester United beat Manchester City in next weekend’s FA Cup final.

Newcastle United won 4-2 away to Brentford with goals from Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes and if Man City win the FA Cup, they will go into the Conference League.

Manchester United warmed up for the Cup final with a 2-0 away to Brighton on Roberto De Zerbi’s last game as home coach, with second half goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund.

In the remaining matches, Tottenham won 3-0 away to Sheffield United to end their hosts’ miserable season and celebrate their fifth-place finish.

Crystal Palace ended the season on a high with a 4-0 win at home to Aston Villa, who had already assured fourth place.

Nottingham Forest ended any tiny survival doubts with a 2-1 win away to relegated Burnley and Luton Town saw their Premier League adventure end in a way that just about summed up their season as they battled hard, but slipped to a 4-2 defeat at home to Fulham.

Preview: League title battles for City, Arsenal

By

LONDON, May 18 (Xinhua) — The Premier League title race goes to the wire in a dramatic last weekend in England, which will also see an emotional farewell at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium.

Although many questions have already been resolved before the final weekend in England, with Aston Villa claiming the fourth place in next season’s Champions League and Luton virtually confirmed as the third side to be relegated to the Championship due to their vastly inferior goal-difference to Nottingham Forest, the big question of who lifts the title is still in the balance.

Manchester City have a two-point lead over Arsenal and if they win at home to West Ham, they will lift the title for the fourth consecutive year, irrespective of Arsenal’s result at home to Everton.

However, if Pep Guardiola’s side lose or draw and Arsenal win, Arsenal would be Champions as they have a goal difference advantage.

Both sides have kept their nerve, traded blows and been unstoppable since they dew 0-0 in City’s Etihad Stadium in March, with eight consecutive wins each.

City’s 2-0 win away to Tottenham on Wednesday looks as if it could be the decisive moment, as they held on against a rival that had chances to take a point, but in the end, key saves from Stefan Ortega and the goals of Erling Haaland made the difference.

Ortega will be in goal on Sunday after it was confirmed that Ederson suffered a fractured eye socket making a save on Wednesday, and although West Ham coach David Moyes will no-doubt instruct his players to give everything in his last game at the club, anything other than a Man City win and another title would be a surprise.

Liverpool’s title challenge ran out of steam in the last weeks of the season and they will have to settle for third place in what will still be an emotional afternoon at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp steps down after nine seasons in charge.

Klopp brought the Champions League 2019 and the much-desired 2020 Premier League titles to Anfield and can expect an emotional 90 minutes at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The other main question to be resolved is who finishes sixth and has the chance to play in Europe next season. Chelsea’s run of four wins has given them a three-point lead over Newcastle United and Manchester United, and three points at home to Bournemouth would see Mauricio Pochettino’s side return to continental competition after a year on the sidelines.

A Bournemouth win at Stamford Bridge and a win for Newcastle away to Brentford would see Newcastle move into sixth place, however, Manchester United’s dreadful goal difference means they have no options even if they win away to Brighton.

Erik ten Hag’s side could still have the last laugh, however, if they beat Manchester City in next weekend’s FA Cup final, as that would give them the last Europa League spot.

Other games this weekend see Sheffield United end their difficult season at home to Tottenham, while Burnley also wave goodbye to the elite with a home game against Nottingham Forest.

Strictly speaking, Forest need a point to seal their survival, but they would need to lose 7-0 and Luton Town to beat Fulham 6-0 for Luton to swap places in the relegation zone.

The remaining game sees Crystal Palace at home to Aston Villa, with the home side aiming for their fifth win in six games as they end the season on a high.
