DOHA, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) — Tyler Adams has been named captain of the United States ahead of their World Cup opener against Wales on Monday, becoming youngest captain for the Americans since Walter Bahr in 1950.

Gregg Berhalter, the head coach of the team, announced the new appointment at the pre-game press conference on Sunday.

“We’re proud to announce Tyler is the captain for the World Cup. We think he has great leadership capabilities. He leads by his actions and his words,” said Berhalter.

The 23-year-old Adams, the last of the 32 captains announced for this year’s World Cup as well as the youngest one, is a homegrown midfielder of the New York Red Bulls academy who turned professional at the age of 16. He joined RB Leipzig of Bundesliga in January 2019 and was transferred to Premier League side Leeds United this summer.

Adams made his national team debut in 2017 and has made 32 international appearances since then, with one goal.

“It’s a huge honor for me, obviously, to be named captain of this team,” Adams said, adding that he felt confident to lead a very young team.

Team USA, with an average age of 25 years and 214 days when the World Cup begins on Sunday, is the second-youngest team among the 32 teams. Only Ghana has a younger 26-man squad than them.

Speaking of their tournament’s opening clash against Wales, Berhalter said midfielder Weston McKennie and right back Sergino Dest were basically healthy and ready to play. However, he wasn’t ready to proclaim either full-time fit.

“They’ve made great progress,” Berhalter said. “We see them as being able to take part in the game.”

“That’s part of having five substitutes. They can either come into the game or start them and take them out of the game when we feel that they’re getting close to that threshold, but both of them are definitely in position to help this team tomorrow,” Berhalter concluded.

MARSEILLE, May 10 (Xinhua) — Kylian Mbappe confirmed on Friday that he will leave French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, without revealing his next destination.

But according to multiple media reports, he will join the La Liga powerhouses Real Madrid after the season ends.

“I wanted to announce to you all that it’s my last year at Paris Saint-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks,” Mbappe said in a video posted on social media.

“I will play my last game at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.”

The French international joined PSG on loan from Monaco in 2017 and officially signed with the capital-based side after the season ended for a transfer fee of 180 million euros.

During his seven years with the team, Mbappe helped the club claim six league titles and three French Cup victories, making 306 appearances and scoring 255 goals, becoming the top scorer in the team’s history.

“It’s a lot of emotions, many years where I had the chance and the great honor to be a member of the biggest French club, one of the best in the world,” said the 26-year-old.

“It allowed me to arrive here, to have my first experience in a club with a lot of pressure, to grow as a player of course, by being alongside some of the best in history, some of the greatest champions,” he added.

“It’s hard and I never thought it would be this difficult to announce that… but I think I needed this, a new challenge, after seven years.”

PSG have already secured the Ligue 1 title of this season and reached the French Cup final, where they will compete for the championship against Lyon on May 25th.

However, in the Champions League where the team most aspired to make a mark, they suffered another disappointing exit as they were eliminated in the semifinals after being defeated in both legs by Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
