President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today formally retitled the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Building to Fathulla Jameel Building.
In remembrance of former Foreign Minister, late Uz Fathuhullah Jameel, President Solih confirmed that the dedication was in gratitude of Uz Fathulla Jameel’s devoted service to the Foreign Ministry and a lasting symbol of his pledge as the longest-serving foreign minister in the history of the Maldives.
It was specified by President Solih at the ceremony that naming one of the most protruding ministries after one of its former Ministers is revealing of the persistence that the late Uz Fathulla Jameel had exhibited during his 27-year and 4-month tenure as the Foreign Minister of the Maldives.
The building, positioned clearly amidst Malé City’s panorama, had been conceived by Uz Fathulla Jameel to stand as an example of Maldivian culture and heritage, he said.
Continuing in this vein, President Solih highlighted that since attaining independence 56 years ago, the Maldives had engaged in foreign policies aimed at protecting human rights and promoting unity, freedom and peace.
He stated that Uz Fathulla Jameel had loyally supported for these same rights and freedoms on the global stage throughout his tenure as the foreign minister.
He further defined the Maldives priorities in the international arena, stating that the Maldives always had and will continue to advocate for; democratic institutions and independence for all countries; personal freedoms and humans rights for all people; and sustainable practices worldwide to protect against the effects of climate change.
President Solih also noted the Maldives’ acceptance and success on the global stage were further evidenced by the landslide victory for the Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid, in the election held on June 7, 2021 to employ the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Building was constructed from the assistance provided by the Chinese government and the building remain as a proof of the established bilateral ties between the two nations. Furthermore, the Chinese government also provided aid to renovate the building. Earlier this year the keys were presented to the ministry after the completion of the renovation project by China.
