A paralyzed teenager achieves his ambition of attending university

By being accepted to a top-tier institution in Beijing for the autumn semester of 2021, a disabled Chinese youngster has made global headlines. His enrollment represents a victory for the disabled community, which has long fought for equal access to higher education.

In northeast China’s Jilin Province, Xing Yifan was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neuromuscular illness, roughly six months after birth. Patients with ALS lose muscle strength over time, eventually paralyzing them and rendering them unable to speak, move, swallow, or breathe.

Xing, who weighs barely 18 kg, is completely reliant on a wheelchair and full-time caregivers for most simple tasks like cleaning his teeth and getting dressed due to severe spinal deformities induced by the condition. The 18-year-old had to prop his head on a desk to read since his muscles are too weak to support his body.

His parents accompanied Xing to every lesson from elementary school until high school. They haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep in over a week since they have to get up every two hours to help him turn over in bed. Someone once proposed that Xing drop out of school to relieve family stress, but his parents resisted. “We’re not going to give up on him,” Xing’s father remarked.

Xing’s terrible physical state did not deter him from studying; rather, it fueled his ambition to do so. He put in a lot of effort in school and received outstanding grades. On his college entrance exams, he received a score of 645 out of 750, which was excellent enough to get him into a reputable university.

A good score, on the other hand, did not guarantee enrolment for Xing. His parents approached numerous universities to see if they would take their kid, and Beihang University eventually decided to enroll him.

The family was overjoyed. Beihang University is Xing’s preferred university, specializing in aeronautical and astronautical research. The wheelchair-bound adolescent is a space fanatic who has always wanted to experience zero gravity. “It must be a lot more open,” Xing speculated. Enrolling a disabled student is more than just submitting an admission letter; it also necessitates additional outside assistance.

The institution provided Xing with a classroom desk that was custom modified for him, as well as a dormitory where his parents could live and care for him full-time.

It also recruited medical specialists from prestigious hospitals to evaluate Xing’s physical state and offer scientific advice on how to live on campus.

Aside from the physical education exemption, the institution did not devise a unique teaching strategy for Xing. Despite the fact that his teachers are aware of his disease, they treat him as if he were any other kid.
