A second audio tape has been leaked of Justice Ali Adam, who was among the bench of justices who passed a guilty verdict on former President Abdulla Yameen. The audio tape was leaked by local news “Vaguthu”.

According to the audio leaked by “Vaguthu”, Justice Ali Adam states that he was contacted and requested to meet top executives of the government. He stated that while he did meet the executives, he did not know the identities of the individuals.

According to Judge Ali Adam, the executives informed him that he would be on the bench to preside over former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s case and instructed him not to talk and that Justice Ali Rasheed would “take care of things”.

“So I just sat on the bench. I honestly don’t even know what was written on the verdict that we passed.” ~ Judge Ali Adam.

In the audio he also stated that Justice Ali Rasheed later approached him and questioned if he also went to meet the executives and stated that he was promised that he would be appointed to the Supreme Court. He also assured Justice Ali Adam that he would be recommended to become the Chief Justice of the Criminal Court.

The audio tape also revealed that the executives which Justice Ali Adam had met with were President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s Legal Counsel Ahmed Abdulla Afeef and President’s Office Chief of Staff Ali Zahir.

On 5th November 2019, Justice Ahmed Hailam who had initially presided over former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s case was replaced just 4 hour prior to his sentencing. Justice Ahmed Hailam later released a statement alleging that top executives from the current administration had contacted him and threatened him to pass a guilty verdict on the former President. His allegations now corroborate with the revelation made today from the leaked audio tapes. The opposition’s allegations of widespread political influence on the judiciary are now viewed by the public as a fact rather than simply allegations.
