World Cup Group B preview: England favorites, but rivals could cause upsets

MADRID, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) — A quick look at Group B implies that England should be the clear favorites to breeze through into the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup, and a possible three straight wins will allow Gareth Southgate’s side to gain confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.

However, any England fan will tell you it’s rarely as simple as that, with memories of their struggles in a group comprised of the United States, Algeria and Slovenia in 2010 coming to mind, and a look at other teams in the group also suggests things may not be as straightforward as they seem.

On paper, England have a better squad and record than Wales, the United States and Iran. They qualified for Qatar with no real problems and travel as the European Championship runners-up.

Southgate will build his team around striker and captain Harry Kane, and midfielders Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. 12 months ago, everyone would have said ‘Harry Maguire’ in defense, but Maguire’s form has deserted him amid the chaos in Manchester United and defense looks to be England’s Achilles heel.

John Stones and Eric Dier look reliable, but injury to Kyle Walker and Reece James (and probably Ben Chilwell) have robbed England of defensive pace. Maguire needs games under his belt to be at his best, but he hasn’t had them and that is a big issue for Southgate.

The England coach has been accused of being over-defensive at times, but with players such as Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford, this time supporters will expect him to be more proactive.

If things go well, England should cruise through the group; if they struggle in defense, it may get touchy.

The United States are a bit of an unknown quantity under coach Gregg Berhalter, who has tried to overhaul his squad to impose a high-pressing style, which also places emphasis on possession on his players.

Recent warm-up games (a defeat to Japan and a draw with Saudi Arabia) highlighted that the United States could have problems in central defense, while they also lack a top-quality center-forward.

Nevertheless, players such as Christian Pulisic undoubtedly have star-quality and the team could depend much on how the Chelsea winger performs in Qatar. Pulisic impressed in 2018 as a free-running wide-man, but these days for his country, he tends to drop deeper to look for the ball from midfield.

Yunus Musah opted to represent the United States, and the youngster is enjoying an impressive season for La Liga side Valencia, in which he has switched from the wing to a more battling central midfield role. Musah’s efforts will also be vital if the U.S. go through their group.

Much could depend on the results of the opening match between the United States and Wales. The Welsh return to the big stage for the first time since 1958 and they will do so with hopes of getting out of the group after winning the play-offs against Austria and Ukraine.

Coach Robert Page has done an exceptional job since replacing Ryan Giggs, and the team spirit that he has helped in inspiring will be one of Wales’ strongest assets in Qatar.

Page can count on plenty of talent, with Gareth Bale always likely to step up a gear in his national shirt, while others such as Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Daniel James add plenty of experience and ability.

Expect Wales to play with three central defenders and with Connor Roberts and Neco Williams to work as wing-backs. Although the game against the United States is likely to be vital, the clash with England is likely to be ‘blood and thunder’ of the highest order where effort could just match talent.

Carlos Queiroz is at the helm for a third time for Iran. Although his predecessor Dragan Skocic can count himself very unlucky to have lost his job after a good qualifying campaign, the Iranians couldn’t ask for a more experienced man in the dugout than the Portuguese globetrotter.

Iran is one of the toughest sides in Asia and habitually reaches the World Cup finals, although they struggle to reach the knockout rounds. Queiroz will be looking to the experienced and versatile AEK Athens defender Ehsan Hajsafi to help steady his side, while others such as former Brighton winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, now at Feyenoord, have excellent technical ability.

Striker Sardar Azmoun is another important player with his 52 goals in 79 appearances for Zenit Saint Petersburg, and the now Bayer Leverkusen forward can be expected to lead the line in Qatar.

Other Iranian players to keep an eye out for are Porto forward Mehdi Taremi, who has an impressive scoring record for club and country, while 25-year-old defender Omid Noorafkan may not be as well known, but his ability to play at full back or in central defense could be important for a side that has a chance of reaching the last 16.

LONDON, April 26 (Xinhua) — Leicester City were promoted back to the Premier League from the Championship (second division) at the first attempt on Friday, without needing to kick a ball on Friday night, after Queens Park Rangers beat Leeds United 4-0.

The result means that Leicester with 74 points are four points ahead of Leeds, who are currently second in the classification with just a game to play, with Ipswich Town on 69 points and fourth place Southampton on 64 points, with two games left this season.

Leicester City were relegated from the end of last season from the Premier League, before appointing Enzo Maresca as first team coach.

Maresca has led them to a successful campaign, with 30 wins from 44 matches and with 86 goals in their favor.

The 2016 Premier League winners will be accompanied into the top flight by either Leeds or Ipswich Town, who have the chance to move above Leeds on Saturday if they win away to seventh place, Hull City, who also need a win to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top-six and getting into the end of season play-offs.

ROME, April 22 (Xinhua) — Inter Milan won their 20th Serie A title on Monday, beating AC Milan 2-1 in a derby that witnessed three players sent off in the dying minutes.

With a comfortable 14-point lead over second-placed AC Milan and only six rounds remaining, Inter Milan was poised to secure the Scudetto even before the derby, aiming to repeat their 2021 championship success. Entering the match at San Siro, Inter fielded a strong lineup with Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram leading the attack, while AC Milan opted to bench Olivier Giroud, positioning Rafael Leao as the lone striker.

The Nerazzurri, who had previously overwhelmed their city rivals 5-1 earlier in the season, opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Federico Dimarco’s corner was deftly flicked on by Benjamin Pavard to Francesco Acerbi, who headed it in. Lautaro missed an opportunity to extend the lead shortly afterward, sending the ball over the bar from an unmarked position.

AC Milan had the chance to equalize but Yann Sommer got down well to deny Leao’s strike, while at the other end Thuram’s attempt was inches wide.

Inter Milan doubled the lead straight after the break in a spectacular fashion when a long ball over the top found Thuram, who cut inside and feinted a curler to the far top corner, but instead the Frenchman smashed it with ferocity into the near corner, surprising goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

AC Milan then threw on Giroud and Noah Okafor to strengthen the attack, and their efforts paid off in the 80th minute when Matteo Gabbia’s header was parried onto the post, before Fikayo Tomori headed it into the net.

The match escalated in stoppage time with the dismissals of Denzel Dumfries and Theo Hernandez from Inter and AC Milan, respectively, and soon after, Davide Calabria was also sent off for elbowing Inter’s Davide Frattesi.

In the final moments, even Milan’s goalkeeper Maignan joined the attack, but AC Milan could not prevent Inter from celebrating their victory.

In another key Serie A battle for fourth place, Bologna secured a 3-1 victory over Roma away from home. Oussama El Azzouzi put Bologna ahead with a spectacular bicycle kick, Joshua Zirkzee added to the lead before halftime, and despite Sardar Azmoun’s effort to narrow the deficit, Alexis Saelemaekers’ lob ensured Bologna solidified their hold on fourth place, now seven points clear of Roma, who have a game in hand.

Dortmund stuns Atletico in dramatic Champions League quarters

BERLIN, April 16 (Xinhua) — Borussia Dortmund turned around a 2-1 first-leg defeat by clinching a hard-earned 4-2 victory over resilient Atletico Madrid in the second leg on home soil on Tuesday.

Dortmund advanced 5-4 on aggregate into the Champions League semifinals.

The BVB immediately went in search of the goal and came close with just three minutes gone when Marcel Sabitzer’s shot from inside the box was blocked by defender Cesar Azpilicueta in the last nick of time.

Two minutes later, Atletico had the golden chance to extend the aggregate lead, but Alvaro Morata pulled wide with only Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to beat.

Dortmund controlled possession though and got rewarded for their efforts at the half-hour mark when Mats Hummel’s defence-splitting through the ball allowed Julian Brandt to fire past Madrid custodian Jan Oblak from a tight angle.

The hosts gained momentum and doubled the lead in the 39th minute as Sabizter teed up for Ian Maatsen, who slotted home from a sharp angle into the far post bottom corner.

After the restart, Los Colchoneros came out with their guns blazing and restored parity on aggregate with the great assistance of Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels, who accidentally cleared Mario Hermoso’s dangerous header into the wrong goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Dortmund as Atletico increased the pressure before retaking the aggregate lead with 69 minutes gone as Dortmund’s defense couldn’t clear the ball from the area, allowing Angel Correa to hammer the ball into the roof of the net, making it 2-2 on the scoreboards.

Dortmund was flabbergasted but bounced back with two goals in quick succession. First, Niclas Fullkrug made it 3-2 on the scoreboards in the 71st minute after heading home Sabitzer’s pinpoint cross before the Austrian international got his name on the scoreboards as well after unleashing a hammer past Oblak two minutes later.

Atletico opened up and pressed frenetically for a goal, but Dortmund’s defense stood firm to claim the team’s first semi-final since 2013. The BVB will encounter Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.

“I am really happy and proud of the boys. We were the better and more active team today. That is why we deserved to advance into the next round,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

“We had the chance to draw the game and go ahead in the tie but, when you don’t take advantage of your chances, this happens, even more so in the Champions League,” commented Atletico captain Koke.
