Maldives achieves target of 1.6 million tourist arrivals for 2022

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation has celebrated reaching H.E President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s tourist arrivals target for 2022 with a vibrant ceremony to welcome the 1.6 millionth tourist to the Maldives. This milestone, announced by President Solih in his Presidential Address this year, was achieved through the hard work and dedication of Government agencies, industry stakeholders، and travel trade partners from across the globe.

The event held today to celebrate the arrival of the 1.6 millionth visitor of 2022 was organised by MMPRC with invaluable assistance from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service. The honoured Chief Guest of the event was the Vice President of the Maldives H.E Faisal Naseem.

The 1.6 millionth visitor, Tejas Sanjay Kothari from India arrived in the Maldives for his honeymoon onboard Air Vistara Flight No. UK271. Tejas Sanjay was conferred special gifts on behalf of MMPRC, the Tourism Ministry, and other stakeholders. This is his first time in the Maldives and he is accompanied by his spouse.

The 1.6 millionth visitor was welcomed and escorted to the event area with traditional Maldivian Boduberu and cultural procession. A traditional Maldivian dance performance was carried out for the visitor after which special gifts were conferred to him by MMPRC, MACL, Tourism Ministry, Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Customs Service. The gifts included a traditional Maldivian Tannu, conferred to the visitor by H.E Vice President Faisal Naseem, a gift hamper from Visit Maldives, and a free holiday voucher from LUX* South Ari Atoll.

the CEO & MD of MMPRC, Mr Thoyyib Mohamed stated that the golden jubilee year of tourism holds a record for milestones related to the tourism sector, citing that this is all due to the persistent and continuous efforts of everyone involved in the industry.

“We are celebrating yet another milestone following our recent momentous wins at the WTA. It is no small feat for a tiny nation like ours to be crowned the World’s Leading Destination thrice in a row. Our perseverance during the harshest of times that the world has seen recently led us to these achievements. All this is undeniably the result of the Government’s foresight in policy formulation; implementation during and post-covid; the sacrifices and hard work of employees of the tourism sector; the joint efforts of every single tourism sector stakeholder; and the noteworthy efforts of MMPRC staff and our network of global travel trade partners. We move forward now, with even more determination to uphold this level of service excellence.”

The Minister of Tourism, Dr Abdulla Mausoom, also made a statement regarding the achievement of this national milestone. “Appreciate the engagement and support of Travel and Tourism Industry stakeholders in achieving yet another milestone of Maldives Tourism success story. Congratulations all! This quick rebound of Maldives tourism to pre-pandemic level is a clear indication of the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, sound tourism policies and the strong partnership between the government and the private sector”, the Minister said.

MMPRC promotes Maldives at KITF

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has begun promoting the Maldives in the Kazakistan International Travel Fair (KITF). A total of 17 companies within the Maldivian tourism industry have participated in the fair along with MMPRC.

KITF is a significant, well-renowned fair hosted in Central Asia since 2001. The fair serves as a crucial platform to expand tourism industries across the world, enhancing more opportunities within the field. This year, the fair is scheduled to be held from April 24 to 26.

MMPRC revealed that the expo intends to establish and bolster ties with Kazakistan and agents in the central region of Asia, while displaying various merchandise from representing the Maldives in a global manner. It further affirmed that maximum efforts will be exerted to provide tourists with the latest information and to showcase the destinations and previous experiences, aiming to attract more tourist arrivals. Additionally, it stated that opportunities are available to establish collaborative partnership ties.

The stand of the Maldives placed in the KITF represents the true sunny side of life. Emphasising the significance of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the MMPRC assured that it is actively involved in promoting and advertising the Maldives to the CIS region through various activities and events. It further stated the significance of using social media as a tool to advertise the Maldives and attract more viewers.

Maldives welcomes over 700,000 tourists

Ministry of Tourism has revealed more than 700,000 tourists have visited the country so far.

The latest statistics published by the tourism ministry show that a total of 728,950 tourist arrivals visited the Maldives between January 1 and April 21, which is an increase of 13.1% compared to the 644,721 arrivals during the same period last year. The statistics show that a total of 192,385 tourists visited the Maldives in January, 217,392 arrivals in February, 194,227 in March and 124,946 arrivals till April 21.

The latest updated report reveals that Chinese tourists constitute the largest portion of total tourist arrivals so far this year, with 77،709 visitors. Following China, the United Kingdom, and Russia along with Italy and Germany, stand out as the next highest sources of tourists, with 72,635 and 72,336, 66,170 and 57,321 arrivals, respectively. Currently, Maldives receives an average of 6451 tourists every day, which spend an average of 7.9 days in the country.

Aiming to expand the tourism industry, the bed capacity has been increased with a total of 62,232 beds. This includes resorts, guest houses, hotels and safaris as well.
