Three key players out as Real Madrid return to La Liga action

MADRID, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) — Real Madrid will be without three key players when they return to league action on Friday night.

French internationals Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga won’t travel to Real Valladolid after only just returning to training after the FIFA World Cup, and veteran midfielder Luka Modric is in the same situation after securing third place with Croatia at the tournament.

Real Madrid’s other World Cup participants should all be available, with the Brazilian trio of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Eder Militao all back at work at the start of the week, although forward Mariano Diaz will miss out with a twisted ankle.

Despite the absences, coach Carlo Ancelotti will be able to field a competitive midfield of Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos, while Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy and David Alaba will all play in defense.

Much attention will be on Karim Benzema, after he was forced out of the France squad on the eve the World Cup with a thigh injury.

There were rumors that he might have been fit enough to return to the French camp before the end of the tournament, but that French coach Didier Deschamps didn’t want him. Benzema’s subsequent announcement that he was retiring from international football has done little to stop the rumor mill.

It’s therefore likely that he will be looking to make a point in the Nuevo Zorrilla Stadium, as Real Madrid look for a win that would take them back to the top of La Liga ahead of Barcelona’s home game to Espanyol on Saturday.

This is Real Madrid’s first competitive game since the World Cup, while Valladolid have the advantage of having played a Copa del Rey match last week, beating fourth-tier Arenas Club 5-1.

“We played well and were very serious in our first game back, and that is going to help us gain confidence,” said Valladolid coach Pacheta, adding that his side would prepare to face Real Madrid in the same way that they had against Arenas Club.

MARSEILLE, May 10 (Xinhua) — Kylian Mbappe confirmed on Friday that he will leave French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, without revealing his next destination.

But according to multiple media reports, he will join the La Liga powerhouses Real Madrid after the season ends.

“I wanted to announce to you all that it’s my last year at Paris Saint-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks,” Mbappe said in a video posted on social media.

“I will play my last game at the Parc des Princes on Sunday.”

The French international joined PSG on loan from Monaco in 2017 and officially signed with the capital-based side after the season ended for a transfer fee of 180 million euros.

During his seven years with the team, Mbappe helped the club claim six league titles and three French Cup victories, making 306 appearances and scoring 255 goals, becoming the top scorer in the team’s history.

“It’s a lot of emotions, many years where I had the chance and the great honor to be a member of the biggest French club, one of the best in the world,” said the 26-year-old.

“It allowed me to arrive here, to have my first experience in a club with a lot of pressure, to grow as a player of course, by being alongside some of the best in history, some of the greatest champions,” he added.

“It’s hard and I never thought it would be this difficult to announce that… but I think I needed this, a new challenge, after seven years.”

PSG have already secured the Ligue 1 title of this season and reached the French Cup final, where they will compete for the championship against Lyon on May 25th.

However, in the Champions League where the team most aspired to make a mark, they suffered another disappointing exit as they were eliminated in the semifinals after being defeated in both legs by Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
